Tenure track position in Casting and Other Metal Forming Technologies (Assistant Professor) /Tenure

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is inviting applications for a tenure track position in Casting and Other Metal Forming Technologies.

Materials science and mechanical engineering are keys to enabling technologies when our society is transitioning from fuel-intensive era towards materials-intensive era. Efficient production of durable and environmentally friendly materials and components play critical roles in our aims for low-carbon and resource-efficient society. Reaching the ever increasing environmental and economic requirements in manufacturing places demand for visionary innovations, pioneering solutions, and revolutionary breakthroughs in casting and metal forming technologies.

The research related to the manufacturing and forming of metal parts and components at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences  is carried out at the Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering (ATME) Unit and at the Materials Science and Environmental Engineering (MSEE) Unit . The research at ATME revolves around several themes on automation, hydraulics, machine design, product development, mechatronics, robotics, control and systems theory, industrial informatics, and production engineering. The efforts on manufacturing include intelligent digital design and manufacturing systems that maximize product and process performance, while improving cost-effectiveness, efficiency of energy and raw materials utilization, and minimizing environmental impacts. On the other hand, the work at MSEE focuses on experimental and numerical characterization of material properties and behavior from the nanoscale up to macroscopic structures as well as on developing advanced processing and manufacturing methods with the aim of improving the ultimate performance and lifetime of materials in demanding operational environments. We have active collaboration with local and international industry and research organizations. Active collaboration between the ATME and MSEE units is expected to assist in the future research and education related to casting and other forming technologies.

 Job description

We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the broad area of Casting and other metal forming technologies for conducting high-level scientific and technological research with high societal impact. Your research in the field of mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering and/or materials science and engineering may focus on, for example,

  • Design methods, multiscale modeling, and experimental methods to improve the behavior and performance of casting, forging and other forming technologies. Of particular interest are approaches that address materials selection, environmental aspects and sustainability, as well as processing-structure-property relationships of these technologies.

Whilst you may have background in research or industrial applications, you are expected to develop your own scientific research profile. Similarly, you are expected to develop strong networks, especially with industries, to promote the societal impact of your research. Your research should strengthen and be complementary to our present research in Mechanical Engineering and/or Engineering Materials Science and to address recent and emerging scientific and societal grand challenges such as sustainability in industrial applications.

Collaboration with leading engineering companies especially in the Tampere area is an essential part of the job profile. You will also play a key role in integrating the educational foundry situated in at Tampere Adult Vocational School with TAU’s research activities. Your activity is also an important part of the TAU’s Sustainable Industrial Ecosystem-SIX.

If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development, and graduate and post-graduate student supervision.

At Tampere University, we value diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates, regardless of nationality, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, or age. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

Requirements

You should have a doctoral degree in materials science, mechanical engineering or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia or in practice. From an Assistant Professor, we require also:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake high-level scholarly activity and potential to establish an independent agenda of scholarly activity at international level of excellence
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • demonstrated experience to cooperate with external stakeholders in industrial research projects.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

Please, read more on our Tenure track career path here.

We offer

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active, and truly international research community.  The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration, e.g., with different fields of natural sciences, materials sciences, and biomedical engineering. We are offering an advanced research infrastructure in these areas.

The initial appointment as Assistant Professor is fixed term for five years. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System.
