Health Data Science is a strategic profiling area of Tampere University that brings together domain experts on data science and health research across faculties. At the Health Sciences Unit in the Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC), we have a tradition of analyzing health data including multimodal data from national registers, hospital data lakes, biobanks and other sources. We aim to develop and validate predictive models to guide health care decisions on prevention, screening and treatment, as well as to develop prognostic and predictive models for optimizing outcomes and evaluating health care effectiveness.
Job description
We are looking for a highly motivated and creative postdoctoral research fellow with a strong background in quantitative methods (biostatistics, data science, health informatics, epidemiology, biomedical data engineering or related fields) and prior experience in research using health data, to join our unit and advance research excellence in health data science.
Candidates are encouraged to propose their own research project. Developing collaboration with ongoing research projects within Health Sciences Unit and other units in SOC and existing data infrastructures is recommended but not required.
Possibilities for collaboration include: (Coctel, COSMOS, LoCard, PRIMUS and other projects that can be found from our Unit’s webpages or project search.
Requirements
- The candidate should have a PhD in a field related to health data science completed within the past five years
- Strong working experience with quantitative methods in health research
- Fluency in written and spoken English (knowledge of Finnish is an advantage).
As an advantage, an ideal candidate would have previous research experience with population health data as well as experience and good understanding about the secondary use of multimodal health data (secure processing environments, data permits, data curation). In addition, the applicant has strong collaboration skills and ability to adapt to different types of tasks.
The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by Tampere University.

Our work is interdisciplinary, and the candidate will be able collaborate with professionals from different fields within health sciences and further develop skills in health data science. We offer an opportunity to work in on-going research projects in the unit with a freedom to tailor the work towards candidate’s own research interests.
- The position will be filled from February 2024, or as mutually agreed. The position is for a fixed-term period of two years. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
- The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demands levels 5-6. A typical starting salary for a Postdoctoral research fellow is approximately 3750 EUR/month.

Haettavalla henkilöllä on vahva tausta kvantitatiivisissa menetelmissä (biostatistiikka, datatiede, terveysinformatiikka, epidemiologia, biolääketieteellinen data-analytiikka tai vastaavat alat) sekä aiempaa kokemusta terveyden tutkimuksesta datatieteen menetelmin.
