The Mathematics Research Centre at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences is looking for a Doctoral Researcher. The mathematics research at Tampere University covers areas from both pure and applied mathematics.

Job description

We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher in algebra: more specifically, in group theory, representation theory, and related topics.

Successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Mikko Korhonen. For more information on his research and publications, please see his personal website: https://korhonenmikko.github.io/ .

Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in four years.

Additionally:

Depending on your experience and interests, you will start your doctoral research related to topics such as (for example): simple linear algebraic groups, unipotent conjugacy classes, groups of Lie type, classical groups, primitive permutation groups.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have:

  • Master’s degree in mathematics or a related field. 
  • Fluency in English. (Finnish Language proficiency is not required.)
  • Ability and motivation to pursue independent research work in mathematics.

You need to have completed a relevant Master’s degree before the starting date of employment.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of maximum four (4) years. The starting date is in Autumn 2026 or as mutually agreedA trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2700 EUR/month.
