Communications intern
The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (Helsinki Commission – HELCOM) is an intergovernmental organization (Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) with its headquarters (Secretariat) in Helsinki, Finland, working to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. At present, we are around 50 staff members at the HELCOM Secretariat in Helsinki, and our working language is English. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and creative intern to support our communication and public information activities. The Intern, who will join the HELCOM communications team and work under the supervision of the Communication Secretary, will have the opportunity to get involved in various media production and content development tasks related to HELCOMs institutional communications. The media production tasks consist mainly of designing and developing communication materials such as social media content and audio-visual material. The intern will also assist in managing our social media channels and be involved in preparations for the HELCOM Ministerial Meeting 2026 (taking place in November 2026 in Warsaw).
Tasks
-Assisting in the development of communication materials and media products related to the HELCOM Ministerial Meeting;
-Assisting with video production;
-Preparing content and updating the HELCOM website;
-Drafting short news items or blog-style articles based on internal material;
-Prepare content for our social media channels;
-Monitoring social media engagement;
-Supporting the communications team in day-to-day activities as needed, including coordination, documentation and administrative tasks.
Qualifications and experience
Proficiency in English and strong digital literacy are essential.
The successful candidate shall have:
-A degree / ongoing studies in a relevant field (e.g. communications, graphic design, journalism/media);
-Strong interest and prior experience in media production, including video and/or visual creation;
-Familiarity with managing or contributing to social media platforms and digital communication channels;
-Strong writing and editing skills in English;
-Good organizational skills and ability to deliver meet deadlines;
-Excellent social and team skills, as well as the ability to work independently;
-Interest in Baltic Sea environmental matters and/or international cooperation.
The following will be considered an asset:
-Experience using the Adobe Creative Cloud tools;
-Experience with website content management systems (e.g. WordPress).
Terms of appointment
The appointment is planned to be full time for three months, starting late August or early September 2026. The salary for a trainee position is 1800 € per month. Please note that the HELCOM salaries are exempt from Finnish income tax.
