Åbo Akademi University invites applications for a fixed-term postdoctoral researcher position in Information Technology for the period 1.8.2025-31.7.2028. The position is full time and will be at the unit for Information Technology in Turku at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
The work tasks of the postdoctoral researcher are primarily related to research intended to deepen and expand the field of research. The research focus area of this position is Software Engineering, more specifically:
- Design, verification, and validation of resilient software-intensive systems
- Software Engineering for AI
- AI for Software Engineering
The work tasks include teaching and supervising undergraduate students up to one-third of the working hours. This includes lecturing two courses per academic year. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the supervision of doctoral researchers and be a member of a collaborative research team.
In this position, we want to support the postdoctoral researcher in deepening and expanding of competence. As the teaching and administrative language of the university is primarily Swedish, the person appointed is also expected to acquire or improve their language skills in Swedish during the employment period.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION
Basic eligibility criteria:
- Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related field. As a rule, the time elapsed since completing the doctoral degree should not exceed four years in accordance with the Regulations for Personnel of the university, excluding maternity leaves, parental leaves, military service, etc. (a copy of the diploma of a doctoral degree should be submitted in the application).
- Strong communication skills in English. Additionally, as Swedish is the language of teaching and administration at Åbo Akademi University, section 78 in the Universities Act (558/2009) and 1–2 § in Instruktion om de kunskaper i svenska och finska som krävs av lärare vid Åbo Akademi (25.2.2010) (in Swedish only) apply to native Finnish citizens. Knowledge of Swedish is regarded as an asset for foreign and non-native Finnish applicants.
Meriting qualifications:
- Outstanding potential and established excellence in research on the research focus areas described above and in relation to the current career stage.
- Strong collaborative and organizational skills
- Previous experience of supervision of undergraduate students
- International research experience, including research visits abroad
The applications will be assessed as follows:
- Research competence (60%) measured through research plan, relevant academic publications, participation in research- and other academic projects and other research-related experience. The research plan must be relevant to the research focus area of the position and the applicants should provide a research plan supporting or complementing the ongoing activities. - Pedagogical competence (20%), including experience in teaching and supervision and studies in university pedagogics or equivalent.
- Interactive competence (20%) that covers the ability to cooperate in a collegial manner and administrative ability and experience, which may have been acquired also in activities outside the academia.
The appointment will be based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s potential for development and competencies and in relation to the necessary qualities to carry out the tasks for the position successfully. The applicants may be invited to an interview.
SALARY AND CONDITIONS
The postdoctoral researcher’s salary is based on levels 5–6 of the job requirement levels for teaching and research staff. In addition, an individual salary component based on personal work performance is added to the salary. The job requirement component in this position is 3 150,54 – 3 673,96 €/month. The individual salary component ranges from a minimum of 6% to a maximum of 50% of the above-mentioned sum. Please see the salary chart for teaching and research personnel.
Researchers have a total working time of 1,612 hours per year. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.

A holiday bonus is paid in connection with July’s salary or when the employment ends. The dimension of the holiday bonus is determined according to the Collective agreement for universities and increases in relation to the length of employment.
