Åbo Akademi University invites applications for a fixed-term salaried position as Doctoral Researcher in Sociology in the Research Council of Finland Academy Project JustISA. The position is full-time during a three-year period, with start date 1 September 2026, or as agreed. The position is located in Turku. 

The project is carried out at the Department of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at the University of Lapland. Both research environments have a strong tradition of research on vulnerabilities and human rights, which is central to this project. The Sociology Unit’s research areas include social norms, civil society, professions, religion, diversity, health and reproduction, and are related to the university’s research profile on minority research. 

The project JustISA Surrogacy Agreements and Interdisciplinary Pathways to Minimum Justice: A Comparative Study of Finland, Colombia and Greece is an interdisciplinary collaboration between sociology and law. The project investigates international surrogacy arrangements and justice-related issues such as the child’s best interests, the desire for parenthood, legislative circumvention, as well as risks and consequences for the individuals involved and for the legal systems through analysis of surrogacy agreements from Colombia and Greece, interviews, social media and other texts from online sources. 

The doctoral researcher’s thesis will primarily be based on articles on data mining of service providers’ online information about surrogacy and public posts on social media. The project group and the supervision team include experts in reproduction and parenthood, rights issues, law and the data mining method.

WORK TASKS

The doctoral researcher’s primary task is to work on the doctoral thesis, as well as to contribute to the activities of the JustISA project. The central work tasks include data collection, data management, and analysis, scientific writing and publishing, communicating research findings, and contributing to the development of the project research. The recruited person will be a part of a larger research team and collaborate around various project activities. QUALIFICATIONS AND MERITS

We are looking for a motivated doctoral researcher with a master’s degree in social sciences, preferably in sociology, to pursue doctoral research within the scope of the JustISA-project. To succeed in the task, you also need to have knowledge of law and an interest in interdisciplinary research. Previous studies related to reproduction and/or experience with quantitative research methods – especially analysis of large-scale text data (data mining) – are considered meritorious. Previous experience of publishing is also considered a merit.

Strong skills in English are meritorious. Knowledge of Swedish and Finnish is an advantage. You also have good communication and collaboration skills as well as the ability to work independently and in a structured way. 

The appointment will be based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s potential for development and competences and in relation to the necessary qualities to successfully carry out the tasks for the position.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The doctoral researcher’s primary task is to work on the doctoral thesis, as well as to contribute to the activities of the JustISA project. Teaching tasks and supervision can comprise a maximum of 5% of the work time.

The primary workplace is located at Åbo Akademi University's campus in Turku, where regular campus presence is expected by the doctoral researcher. Hybrid work is possible, with flexibility for remote work within Finland.
 
The principle of total work time (1612 hours per year) is applied to employed doctoral researchers. The supervision and study plan for doctoral researchers will be evaluated annually. 

The salary for doctoral researchers is determined according to requirement levels 2–4 for teaching and research staff. Currently, the starting salary for a new doctoral researcher is approximately €2,700 per month. The salary will be adjusted as the dissertation work progresses, reaching approximately €3,500 per month as the doctoral researcher approaches the completion of the doctoral degree. A trial period applies to new employees.
 
The selected candidate will be employed for a maximum period of three years. A trial period of six months applies to new employees.

Please note, that upon acceptance, there is a separate application process for the admission to a doctoral programme at ÅAU. Thus, applicants that have not yet been admitted to the ÅAU doctoral programme will also be considered for the position. A short-term employment contract as Research Assistant within the project might come into question between completion of the recruitment and admission to the PhD programme.

**A description of the applicant’s research interests (max. three A4 pages, excl. references) is central in the evaluation of the applicants. The description must be related to the topic of the JustISA project and will be evaluated on this basis. The description should account for how the proposed doctoral research contributes to the JustISA-project and how a doctoral researcher position would complement the applicant’s knowledge and previous experience.

Projektet JustISA Surrogacy Agreements and Interdisciplinary Pathways to Minimum Justice: A Comparative Study of Finland, Colombia and Greece är ett tvärvetenskapligt samarbete mellan sociologi och juridik. Projektet undersöker internationella surrogatarrangemang och rättvisefrågor såsom barnets bästa, önskan att bli förälder, kringgående av lagstiftning, samt risker och konsekvenser för inblandade individer och rättssystem genom analys av surrogatavtal från Colombia och Grekland, intervjuer, sociala medier och andra texter från Internetkällor.  

Doktorandens avhandling kommer primärt att baseras på artiklar om data mining av tjänsteleverantörers information på Internet om surrogatmoderskap och offentliga inlägg på sociala medier. I projektgruppen och handledningsteamet ingår experter på reproduktion och föräldraskap, rättighetsfrågor, juridik och metoden data mining.  

ARBETSUPPGIFTER

Doktorandens huvudsakliga uppgift är att arbeta med sin doktorsavhandling samt bidra till JustISA-projektets verksamhet. De centrala arbetsuppgifterna inkluderar datainsamling, datahantering och analys, vetenskapligt skrivande och publicering, kommunikation av forskningsresultat samt bidrag till utvecklingen av projektforskningen. Den rekryterade personen kommer att vara en del av ett större forskarteam och samarbeta kring olika projektaktiviteter. KVALIFIKATIONER OCH MERITER

Vi söker dig som har en högre högskoleexamen i samhällsvetenskaper, gärna i sociologi. För att lyckas i uppgiften behöver du även ha kännedom om juridik och ett intresse för tvärvetenskaplig forskning. Tidigare studier relaterade till reproduktion och/eller erfarenhet av kvantitativa forskningsmetoder – särskilt analys av storskaliga textdata (data mining) – betraktas som meriterande. Tidigare erfarenhet av publicering ses även som meriterande.

Vi förutsätter att du har mycket goda kunskaper i engelska. Kunskaper i svenska och finska är en fördel. Du har också god kommunikations- och samarbetsförmåga samt förmåga att arbeta självständigt och strukturerat.

Ansökningarna bedöms utifrån ovan nämnda kriterier och kvalifikationer, samt möjliga intervjuer. Anställning görs efter en helhetsbedömning av skicklighet och utvecklingspotential i relation till sökandes förutsättningar att genomföra de arbetsuppgifter som ingår i anställningen.

ANSTÄLLNINGSVILLKOR

Doktorandens huvudsakliga uppgift är att arbeta på sin doktorsavhandling samt att bidra till JustISA-projektets aktiviteter. Undervisning och handledning kan ingå i mindre utsträckning (5 % av arbetstiden). Den primära arbetsplatsen ligger på Åbo Akademis campus i Åbo, där regelbunden närvaro förväntas av doktoranden. Hybridarbete är möjligt, med flexibilitet för distansarbete inom Finland.

Anställda doktorander följer systemet med helhetsarbetstid om 1 612 arbetstimmar per år. Doktorandens individuella studieplan uppföljs årligen.

Lönen för doktorander läggs enligt kravnivåerna 2-4 för undervisnings- och forskningspersonal. För närvarande är ingångslönen för en ny doktorand ca 2700 €/månad. Lönen justeras vartefter avhandlingsarbetet framskrider, så att den är ca 3500 €/mån när doktoranden närmar sig doktorsexamen.

Anställningsperioden är tre år och på heltid. En prövotid på sex månader tillämpas för nya anställda.

Observera den separata ansökningsprocessen för antagning till ett doktorandprogram vid Åbo Akademi. Ifall den som väljs för anställning ännu inte blivit antagen till ett doktorandprogram, kan anställningen inledas som forskningsassistent.

**En beskrivning av sökandens forskningsintressen (max tre A4-sidor, exklusive referenser) är central i utvärderingen av sökandena. Beskrivningen måste vara relaterad till ämnet för JustISA-projektet och kommer att utvärderas utifrån detta. Beskrivningen bör ta hänsyn till hur den föreslagna doktorandforskningen bidrar till JustISA-projektet och hur en doktorandbefattning skulle komplettera sökandens kunskap och tidigare erfarenhet.
