The Faculty of Built Environment (BEN) at Tampere University has an open position for a University lecturer starting in Summer 2026. This position is based in the Urban Physics Research Group, Department of Civil Engineering, and would provide teaching for the interdisciplinary Sustainable Urban Development degree programme.

Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) is an international Bachelor’s degree programme which began at Tampere University in 2020. The programme provides students with multidisciplinary skills and expertise related to urban development and sustainability. Within the programme, streams in Technology, Administrative Sciences, and Social Sciences provide students with discipline-specific skills and knowledge. In the technology track, students learn technological and engineering skills, and how to use them to create sustainable built environments. Common courses for all SUD students provide opportunities for multidisciplinary teaching, teamwork, and involvement in real-life urban development projects.  

The Urban Physics Research Group in the Faculty of the Built Environment, Tampere University, was established in 2022, and aims to understand how to design and build urban environments that are energy efficient, healthy, and comfortable – now and in the future. The group employs eight research group members, with expertise in environmental monitoring, physics-based modelling, data science, and Geographic Information Systems. Together, we study urban climate, carbon emissions, and air pollution, and how cities can be changed to improve environmental health and be more sustainable. Through high impact research, international collaborations, and quality teaching, we aim to produce the knowledge and educate the next generation of urban development experts needed to help solve key urban development challenges. 

Job description  

We are seeking an outstanding and motivated university lecturer in Sustainable Urban Development (Technology) to join our department. A successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and knowledge exchange in the SUD programme. 

You will play a key role in delivering innovative teaching at undergraduate levels, supervising student research, and helping to develop an internationally recognized research portfolio. Duties include teaching courses with lecturers from other faculties, including foundational courses on urban development, two challenge-based urban lab courses, and teaching and supervision in the Bachelor’s thesis seminar. You will contribute to curriculum development, ensuring that teaching reflects the latest research developments. While predominantly teaching-focused, the university lecturer will be expected to develop their research profile, and will have opportunities to be involved in research, research management, and proposal development as part of the Urban Physics Research Group. 

At Tampere University, lecturers:  

  • Provide and promote teaching at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels.  
  • Supervises theses at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.  
  • Participate in the planning and administration of degree programs  
  • Conduct scientific research.  
  • Follow the development of science in their field.  
  • Participate in societal interaction and international cooperation.

Requirements  

The selected candidate for the university lecturer position is required to have:  

  • An applicable doctoral degree in engineering or building physics, urban climatology, environmental modeling or monitoring, data science, geoinformatics, or a closely related discipline. 
  • Strong quantitative skills, with a background of using these skills to measure or model urban outdoor or indoor environments.  
  • A track record of independent scholarly activity related to urban physics, including recent scientific publications and evidence of recent impactful research in urban physics or a related field (e.g., urban climate, urban-scale modeling, building-environment interactions). 
  • Ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction (studies in university pedagogy) and experience in university-level teaching and student supervision in the area of built environment sustainability.  
  • The interpersonal skills required for interdisciplinary SUD teaching, evidenced by a history of multidisciplinary collaboration. The position requires close cooperation with teaching staff from the faculties of Built Environment, Social Sciences and Administrative Sciences, meaning the ability to collaborate with experts across disciplines is essential. 
  • Fluency in English. 
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with diverse audiences, including students from a wide range of international and academic backgrounds.

Additionally, the following are considered an advantage:  

  • Evidence of international scientific activities, such as participation in international research networks or international teaching collaborations.  
  • The demonstrated ability to independently acquire research funding and lead research projects. 
  • Fluency in Finnish.

We offer  

The position will be filled full-time and on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence in the summer 2026 as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.  

The salary will be based on the job demand and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of University Lecturer is placed on job demand level 6-7. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary salary will be paid according to personal performance, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
