We are looking for an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in the field of Bioelectronics. The open position is with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University. 

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). 

The position will be placed in the Biomedical Technology (TECH) Unit. In TECH unit, interdisciplinary research areas include biosensors, biomedical micro- and nanotechnologies, biomaterials, bioimaging, biophysics, body-on-chip technologies, and cell technologies for various tissue and disease states. 

Job description 

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a track record of internationally competitive research in bioelectronics, in the convergence of biology, electronics and biomedical engineering. Research interest and teaching capacity in bioelectronics devices, materials and systems would fit to our Faculty’s research portfolio. We require experience and insight in system-level considerations, including wireless communication units, power sources, interfaces, and/or encapsulation in human body environment.  Achievements and track-record in developing AI-based bioelectronics design are appreciated.

Especially, we are seeking applicants with expertise for example in the following application areas:

  • Soft bioelectronic materials, devices, and systems
  • Bionic systems
  • Implantable and wearable sensors and systems
  • Electrical biosensors
  • Wireless communication in body-centric environment
  • RFID-based sensors in biomedical applications
  • Interdisciplinary approaches, e.g. cell/tissue and electronics interfaces

You are expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in your topic area at a high level. We appreciate innovative, forward-looking candidates with a clear research vision.  The candidate must demonstrate sustained international and national research collaboration.  Collaboration with industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research group as well as nurture interactions with the wider society. You will contribute to degree education in line with your own expertise. We require excellent collaboration and communication skills to operate in our interdisciplinary research environment.

Requirements 

You should have a doctoral degree in the field of electronics or electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials engineering or a related field and have experience in research in academia in the respective field or fields. You need to be fluent in English to succeed in the required tasks.  Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:

Assistant Professor 

We require: 

  • applicable doctoral degree 
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence
  • suitable proof and track record on the potential for applying and acquiring external research funding   
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position. 

Associate Professor 

We require: 

  • applicable doctoral degree 
  • track record of independent scholarly activity 
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • suitable proof and track record on the ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding 
  • track record of international scholarly activity. 

Professor 

We require: 

  • applicable doctoral degree 
  • high-level scholarly expertise 
  • experience of leading scientific research 
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction  
  • track record of winning external research funding   
  • track record of international scholarly 
  • track record on academic teaching and supervision of PhD and undergraduate degrees

The position requires good communication skills in English. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment for management of administrative responsibilities. We offer

Initial appointment as assistant professor and as associate professor is for five years and, subject to successful performance you will become a tenured member of faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. 

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The typical starting salary of an assistant professor will range between 4400-5000 EUR/month, salary of an associate professor between 5100-5800 EUR/month and salary of a professor between 5900-6900 EUR/month. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.
