Tampere University Electrical Engineering unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences offers summer intern positions as Research Assistants related to interesting research topics in our three main fields of research and education:
- Communications Engineering and Radio Systems, and the corresponding Tampere Wireless Research Centre (Tampere Wireless)
- Electronics and Embedded Systems, and the corresponding Tampere Electronics Research Centre (ERC)
- Electrical Energy Engineering, and the corresponding Tampere University Research Centre of Electrical Energy Engineering (EEERC)
We are looking for B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree students at Tampere University for the summer 2026. We do not expect previous research experience but appreciate enthusiasm to work hard and learn more. It is also possible to continue as full-time or part-time research assistant during the fall, if mutually agreed. The topics may also be suitable for B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. theses.
Job description
Tampere Wireless focuses on fundamental basic science and applied research related to different wireless systems and networks. We develop new technology, e.g., for 5G evolution and future 6G mobile cellular networks, satellite and other aerial systems, wireless localization and sensing, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet applications, as well as defense systems. The nature of the work can include development of new algorithms, hardware, protocols or networking solutions, and/or evaluating and measuring the achievable performance through computer simulations and real-world measurements.
At Tampere Electronics Research Center, we strive to answer fundamental questions about how electronics can become more efficient and versatile, which materials and architectures hold the potential to transform the field, and how innovation can contribute to a more sustainable world for society, the economy, and nature. Our research spans a wide range of activities in electronics and embedded systems including printed electronics, advanced semiconductor devices and systems, advanced microelectronics packaging, RF and antenna technology, and microelectronics for industrial, healthcare, and consumer domains. The work can include theoretical framework, modeling and simulation, electronics design, process development, experimental characterization and testing.
EEERC focuses on generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical energy. We research and develop new solutions based on strong electrotechnical knowledge and its application it in the fields of electromechanics, applied superconductivity, power electronics, high voltage engineering and materials, electrical systems and electricity market. The work can include, for example, scientific computation, simulation, programming, control algorithm development and laboratory measurements.
Requirements
Minimum formal requirement is a high-school degree. Successful candidates must also have a master’s degree study right at Tampere University, capability to communicate clearly in English and motivation to work in some of the aforementioned areas. We value good study records and ability to demonstrate high-quality writing and reporting skills. Finnish language skills may be considered as an advantage in some tasks.
We offer
The positions are filled for a fixed term period of 3-4 months during the summer 2026. The starting date and the exact length of the employment will be mutually agreed. A trial period applies to all our new employees.
The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The position of Research Assistant is placed on the job demand level 1 (the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff). In addition, employees will receive performance-based salary which for Research Assistants is based on their study credits. Salary for a Research Assistant is around 2198 € – 2551 € depending on completed study credits.
