The Unit of Social Research is the largest unit in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The key research themes are the transformation of social governance, social and societal processes and risks, and the challenges of well-being and sustainable development. The unit hosts six disciplines: social psychology, sociology, social policy, youth research, social anthropology and gender studies. The Social Research Unit also has four research centers: The Working Life Research Center (WRC), the Tampere Centre for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (TaSTI), the Childhood, Youth and Family Research Center (PERLA) and Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI).
Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) is a multidisciplinary and international research center whose mission is to conduct high quality research on the causes of war, on non-violent resolution of conflicts, and on conditions for peace. The overarching focus of TAPRI’s research is peaceful change. Research themes covered at TAPRI are diverse and open to new interventions, but there are five thematic priority areas: Feminist Peace Research and Everyday Peace Approaches; Peace Architectures and Practices; Environment, Climate Change and Peace; Human Mobilities and Transnational Dimensions of Conflicts; and Imaginaries of Peace: Visual and Narrative Perspectives. TAPRI research produces critical knowledge and is committed to peaceful change. It also bears long-term policy relevance. TAPRI’s research areas include conflict resolution and transformation including peacebuilding and mediation processes; post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation including remembrance, post-conflict justice, ethics and recognition; human mobility; the gendered nature of peace and war; and the continuums of violence including structural, slow and epistemic violence.
TAPRI hosts international master’s degree programme in Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research. The degree programme is internationally recognized, with students from all over the world and with a variety of different academic backgrounds. TAPRI has also doctorate training in the field of peace and conflict research within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
