The Chemistry and Advanced Materials group (Materials Science and Environmental Engineering Unit) at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in Synthetic Chemistry Team, led by Adj. Prof. Alexander Efimov. The position is meant for a consortium research with Åbo Akademi on biomimetic organic/inorganic catalysts for efficient conversion of methane to methanol (MEMBMCAT), funded by the Research Council of Finland for 2025-2028.
Job Description
A postdoctoral researcher will work in the Synthetic Chemistry Team at Tampere University https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/synthetic-chemistry. The job will focus on preparation of atomically dispersed metal phthalocyanines and extended bimetallic complexes, and their incorporation into specifically designed cavities of zeolites and mesoporous materials. The aim of the research is to achieve a highly effective oxidation of methane to methanol at mild conditions. Apart from the synthetic work, the research will also include an extensive analytical work on heteronuclear solid state NMR, mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy. The work suggests a strong international collaboration; in addition to Åbo Akademi and Tampere University, the research partners from RIKEN (Japan), Aveiro University (Portugal) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) are involved.
Requirements
We are looking for a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to carry out outstanding research. You should have a doctoral degree in synthetic chemistry, catalysis or related field, and have strong synthetic skills and experience. The working language of the project is English, thus fluency in written and spoken English is a must; knowledge of Finnish or Swedish is an asset. Knowledge and experience in solid state NMR and HRMS techniques are desirable. You are expected to be a team player, however able to work independently. Apart from the experimental work your duties will include scientific writing, supervision of undergraduate students, and participation in teaching.
Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, forward-thinking and evolving community. Our values are openness, critical thinking, diversity, learner-centeredness, courage, erudition and responsibility. We hope you can embrace these values and promote them in your role.
We offer
The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of up to 4 years, until 31.12.2028. The starting date is negotiable but preferably be in early 2025. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Salary system of Finnish universities. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5–6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3600–4200 EUR/month, depending on the previous work experience.
The Synthetic Team is a part of Chemistry and Advanced Materials Group (https://www.tuni.fi/en/about-us/chemistry-and-advanced-materials-cam) at Tampere University. We are a highly multinational community working in a world-leading research institution, with a strong international collaboration within a large network of experts across the world.
We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.
