Operating environment and its changes
Broad global phenomena, such as climate change, the ageing of the population and the workforce, disruptions in global supply chains, increasing psychosocial workload at work, and tightening corporate responsibility requirements, create new research and development needs related to occupational and environmental safety and resilience. At the same time, new technologies such as rapidly developing large language models, wearable devices and virtual presence create breakthrough opportunities to renew the analysis and management of safety risks. Changes such as the increasing use of interactive robotics, the wider adoption of new energy solutions and evolving ways of organizing services also require the renewal of ensuring safety and sustainability as well as of safety management.
Tampere is a major concentration of Finnish industry, and a strong, internationally recognized safety cluster has been built in the Pirkanmaa region, involving private and public organizations as well as third-sector actors. In addition to Tampere University, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health carry out impactful RDI work in the region, and key authorities in the field are located in Tampere, such as the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes), the Department for Work and Gender Equality of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and the Occupational Safety and Health Department at the Finnish Supervisory Agency. Safety management and the development and deployment of technologies are central themes in many sectors, from industry and energy production to construction, logistics, ICT, infrastructures and public services. Research topics and solutions arise from combinations of management approaches, technologies and disciplines, such as managing occupational and environmental risks in the green transition, AI-assisted risk analyses, effective use of accident and health data to support management, the role of safety in the resilience of international supply chains, and taking international mobility of people into account in occupational safety management.
