Chief specialist, Bio Based Solutions

Would you like to be involved in developing new bio-based solutions and play a strong role in multidisciplinary research, development, and innovation activities? We are seeking an experienced researcher specialized in biomass processing, the development of bio-based materials, or bio-based processes.
The Technology Unit of LAB University of Applied Sciences educates engineers, laboratory analysts, and construction managers for future expert roles and provides continuing education to meet various needs. We are active in research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities and value broad and versatile expertise.
What the position involves
In this role, you will focus on the research and development of new bio-based solutions. The objective is to replace fossil-based raw materials with sustainable, reusable, recyclable, and renewable alternatives. The work is research-oriented and is part of LAB University of Applied Sciences’ multidisciplinary research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities.
You will work as part of a motivated and scientifically ambitious research group specializing in biomass processing, the development of bio-based materials, and bio-based processes. You will collaborate closely with LAB researchers and experts as well as with national and international partners.
You will be responsible for the scientific content of the selected research topic. You will develop and innovate new project initiatives and research entities as part of LAB University of Applied Sciences’ strategic RDI themes together with our partners. You will write scientific articles and actively participate in the publication of research results. In addition, you will provide scientific and content-related support to experts and project teams. You will also actively participate in demanding, competitive research funding applications, such as those of Business Finland and EU funding programmes.
What we expect from you
You hold a doctoral degree (PhD/Doctor of Technology) in materials chemistry, biochemistry, another biomaterials-related field, or for example in process engineering, biotechnology, or wood processing technology. Experience in industry and applied research in a relevant field is considered an advantage.
As a leading expert, you will participate in RDI activities and are expected to have strong expertise and demonstrated competence in one or more of the following areas:
- Fermentation or similar bioproduction methods (microalgae, gas fermentation, polymer production)
- Research and development of bio-based materials, especially biopolymers
- Identification and separation of value fractions from bio-based side streams, and further development of isolation and purification methods
- Development of pilot-scale biorefinery environments and scaling of bioprocesses (expertise in process simulation, modelling, or techno-economic assessment is considered an advantage)
- Capture and utilization of biogenic CO₂ (Bio-CCU), including pyrolysis and its applications
- Public funding instruments and management of application processes in collaboration with international partners
What we offer you
We offer you a front-row position at an innovation-driven university of applied sciences, where you have the opportunity to observe and influence the development of future competencies. You will have access to a growing network of companies and research institutes that fosters cooperation and the creation of new solutions. You will work in an increasingly international, skilled, and enthusiastic community that values openness, curiosity, and teamwork. We have a strong and continuously developing research infrastructure.
Your primary workplace can be either the Lahti or Lappeenranta campus. At LUT Universities, we use a modern hybrid work model that combines flexibility with regular collaboration on campus.
We follow the collective agreement for universities of applied sciences (Sivistysala ry). The position falls under the working time system for expert and support staff, with a working time of 36.25 hours per week.
The position is permanent and full-time, starting on 1 June 2026 or as agreed. The contractual salary ranges from €5,200 to €6,200 per month depending on the applicant’s skills and experience. The employment relationship is permanent and full-time and begins with a six-month probationary period.
