The green transition and the increasingly tense geopolitical situation are jointly reshaping the safety and security landscape of the northern Baltic Sea and influencing the risks of environmental accidents in multiple ways. Researchers in the WATERWAYS project analyze changes in the risk landscape, assess environmental damage risks related to hazardous substances, and evaluate Finlands national preparedness level, updating previous risk models as necessary. The risk models are based on probability-driven system and decision analysis. Through modeling, the project aims to improve the understanding of risk management needs and assess the effectiveness, costs, and flexibility of alternative measures in light of future uncertainties.
