English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher, Middle and High School
Kelem International School (KIS), originally established under the Swedish Embassy in Ethiopia in 1946, transitioned in 2019 to an independent, not-for-profit international school. We now seek an experienced and passionate English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher for Middle and High School, committed to fostering a love for literature, enhancing students’ communication skills, and promoting critical thinking aligned with the Finnish curriculum and international best practices.

With a diverse student body of 200 students from 28 nationalities, KIS offers education from Pre-KG to Grade 10, combining the Finnish curriculum and international educational standards, alongside the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) for Kindergarten. Job Summary
The ELA Teacher will deliver student-centred instruction enhancing literacy, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. Responsibilities include:
Designing and implementing dynamic, inquiry-based lessons aligned with Finnish curriculum standards.
Developing students’ abilities in text analysis, interpretive thinking, and articulate communication.
Teaching diverse writing genres, including creative, academic, persuasive, and research-based writing, emphasizing grammar and clarity.
Fostering independent learning, curiosity, and appreciation for diverse literature and global perspectives.
Using varied assessment methods to tailor support to diverse learning needs.
Integrating digital resources to enhance instruction and engagement.
Collaborating with educators to refine curriculum content and instructional strategies.
Establishing a structured, inclusive classroom promoting respectful dialogue and student autonomy.
Supporting literacy initiatives like book clubs, writing competitions, and student publications.
Communicating openly with parents about student progress and involvement opportunities.
Participating in continuous professional development to stay current with literacy education best practices.
Reports to: Team Leader
Coordinates with: Principals, Teaching staff, Learning Support Department, Curriculum Development Team, and Parents
Job Requirements
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature Education or related field: Master’s preferred.
Certification and Experience: Valid secondary teaching certification, minimum 3 years of teaching ELA at middle or high school level. Familiarity with Finnish or international curricula preferred.
Pedagogical Expertise: Skilled in literature instruction, writing, and critical thinking: proficiency in inquiry-based learning and differentiated instruction.
Communication and Collaboration: Excellent English proficiency: knowledge of Amharic advantageous: effective in multicultural settings.
