Intern Optical Physics (Design of dielectric metasurfaces for optical communication solutions)
Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science-inventing life-changing products and technologies since1851.
Corning succeeds through sustained investment in R&D, a unique combination of materials and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges.
We apply our unparalleled expertise in glass science, ceramic science, and optical physics along with our deep manufacturing and engineering capabilities to make vital contributions that advance how the world works, learns, and lives. We offer a diverse and innovative work environment, with opportunities for growth and a strong commitment to research and development.
Corning Scientific Center in Helsinki operates as a critical part of the Modeling & ComputingTechnologies group that services Cornings global RD&E organization. We work closely with experimentalist partners around the globe to apply modeling capabilities to increase the pace of Cornings innovation in addition to collaborating internally with business and across Research, Development, Engineering, and commercial technology.
As an intern, you will work closely with a dedicated team of over 40 scientists based at our office, Helsinki/Salmisaari. Together, you will support our global customers, from laboratories toproduction facilities, by innovating and optimizing our products and processes.
We are seeking an enthusiastic intern to join our research team focused on developing novel optical solutions for optical communication based on dielectric metasurfaces. These solutions span the entire innovation cycle-from conceptual design and numerical optimization to fabrication and experimental validation.
As part of the modeling team, you will:
Develop and/or enhance physics-based numerical models for the design and optimization of dielectric metasurfaces used in advanced optical communication systems.
Perform simulations and parametric studies to evaluate performance under various design constraints.
Conduct a literature review to identify state-of-the-art approaches.
Analyze simulation data, interpret results, and present findings to the team through reports and presentations.
Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and potentially co-author scientific publications.
Education and Experience:
BS / MS / PhD student in Physics (preferred in Optics)
Required Skills:
Knowledge in Optics (geometrical optics, Fourier optics, wave propagation, and optical fiber modes).
Proficiency in Python for scientific computing (NumPy, SciPy), including basic object-oriented programming concepts.
Ability to communicate effectively in English (spoken and written).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
Eagerness to learn and adapt to a fast-paced research environment.
Desired Skills:
Familiarity with optimization techniques (gradient-based and gradient-free methods).
Basic understanding of dielectric metasurfaces and their applications in photonics.
Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools (e.g., FDTD solvers such as Lumerical/ANSYS).
Knowledge of machine learning applications in optical design.
Exposure to high-performance computing environments or parallel computing for large-scale simulations.
Discoveries daily. Change the world here.
The Corning Scientific Center internship is paid and exceeds the minimum salary defined by the universities. The internship typically lasts
3 months
and generally starts in June. However, the exact start date is flexible and can be discussed with the hiring team.
This position does not support immigration sponsorship.
