The Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology in Turkuoffers four (4) new, funded positions for doctoral researchers (max. 48 months/position).

The Faculty covers research and education in culture, history and philosophy, languages, speech and language pathology, psychology and theology and the funded positions are, available within the following doctoral programmes: 

• The Doctoral Programme in Arts (main subjects: Art History, English Language and Literature, Philosophy, Finnish Language, French Language and Literature, Gender Studies, General History, Comparative Literature, Musicology, Nordic Ethnology, Nordic Folkloristics, Nordic History, Study of Religions, Russian Language and Literature, Swedish Language, German Language and Literature)
• The Doctoral Programme in Theology (main subjects: Exegetics, Church History, Practical Theology, Study of Religions, Systematic Theology)
• The Doctoral Programme in Psychology and Speech and Language Pathology (main subjects: Psychology, Speech and Language Pathology).

The faculty encourages new doctoral researchers to apply for the funded doctoral positions. 

The employment as doctoral researcher may start September 1, 2025, or as per agreed.
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION
This announcement is open for those who have a Master’s Degree AND a supervisor or a potential supervisor from Åbo Akademi University (who has agreed to supervise the applicant) within any of the subjects represented at the Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology. 

Applicants must have received their Master’s degree (or equivalent) by June 30, 2025, at the latest (copy of degree certificate achieved after the application has closed should be sent to graduateschool@abo.fi.
 
An applicant, who is not yet admitted for doctoral studies at the faculty, needs to fulfil the requirements for doctoral studies according to the principles for admission to the doctoral programmes within the faculty. Please note that there is a separate application process for the admission to a doctoral programme at ÅAU. The admission process for a study right can be initiated after receiving an offer of funding. The doctoral researcher needs to be enrolled in the doctoral programme when the employment starts.

The applicants are assessed on the basis on their research plan (weight 50 %), and previous study achievements, including possible results of previous research in the relevant field or related subjects (weight 50%). Applicants may be invited to an interview.

Previously received funding for doctoral studies will be considered when determining the final length of the employment (the received funding can amount to a total maximum of 48 months).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Doctoral researchers employed by Åbo Akademi University should actively take part in research and education within the faculty on campus in Turku.  

Åbo Akademi University applies the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary for a doctoral position will be based on levels 2-4 of the job demand level for teaching and researching staff in the salary system. Currently, the starting salary for doctoral researchers is approximately 2,580 € per month. The salary increases as the candidate makes progress towards a doctoral degree.  

Doctoral researchers will have total working time, which means 1,612 hours per academic year. The employment is full-time. The individual study plan for doctoral students will be evaluated annually.

A trial period applies to new employees.

1. A free-form application letter including motivation and suitability for the position; (intended) main subject and the applied period of funding should be clearly stated.
2. Research plan in English or Swedish according to instructions 
3. Recommendation letter from the ÅAU supervisor or the ÅAU supervisor-to-be.
4. A curriculum vitae, composed according to the template by The Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity
5. Copies of diplomas including transcript of records (BA, MA, MSc, other) including transcript of records (showing received grades)
6. Doctoral researchers already registered at ÅAU: Account of all previous funding (salary, working grants) received for the doctoral studies (funding organization + time period + sum received), and other funding that has been applied for (in addition to this application).

Deadline for submission of application is on May 15, 2025 at 3.00 p.m. (Finnish time).

Vid fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi i Åbo ledigförklaras att sökas fyra (4) nya avlönade doktorandbefattningar (max 48 månader/befattning).

Vid fakulteten bedrivs forskning och utbildning inom kultur, historia och filosofi, logopedi, psykologi, språk och teologi och fakulteten erbjuder de finansierade doktorandbefattningarna inom följande doktorandprogram: 

• Doktorandprogrammet i humaniora (huvudämnen: allmän historia, engelska språket och litteraturen, filosofi, finska språket, franska språket och litteraturen, genusvetenskap, konstvetenskap, litteraturvetenskap, musikvetenskap, nordisk etnologi, nordisk folkloristik, nordisk historia, religionsvetenskap, ryska språket och litteraturen, svenska språket, tyska språket och litteraturen) 
• Doktorandprogrammet i teologi (huvudämnen: exegetik, kyrkohistoria, praktisk teologi, religionsvetenskap, systematisk teologi) 
• Doktorandprogrammet i psykologi och logopedi (huvudämnen: psykologi, logopedi) 

Fakulteten uppmuntrar nya doktorander att söka de utlysta doktorandbefattningarna.

Anställningen inleds 1.9.2025, i övrigt enligt överenskommelse.

BEHÖRIGHETSKRAV OCH BEDÖMNING
Denna utlysning är öppen för de som har en magisterexamen OCH en handledare eller tilltänkt handledare vid Åbo Akademi vid något av de huvudämnen som finns vid fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi. Sökande måste ha avlagt sin magisterexamen (eller motsvarande) senast 30.6.2025. En kopia på examensbetyg eller intyg över avlagd examen som erhålls efter ansökningstidens utgång skickas till graduateschool@abo.fi.  

Sökande som vid ansökningsskedet ännu saknar studierätt för forskarutbildning vid fakulteten bör uppfylla kriterierna i enlighet med principerna för antagning till doktorandprogrammen vid fakulteten. Notera att anhållan om studierätt till forskarutbildningen sker via ett separat ansökningsförfarande. Processen att ansöka om studierätt för forskarutbildning kan initieras efter att sökande har fått besked om en avlönad doktorandbefattning. Doktoranden bör vara antagen till doktorandprogrammet när anställningen inleds.

Sökande utvärderas på basis av forskningsplan (viktning 50 %) samt tidigare studieprestationer, inklusive eventuella forskningsresultat inom ämnesområdet eller närliggande ämne (viktning 50 %). 

Sökande kan inbjudas till intervju.

För doktorandstudierna erhållen tidigare finansiering påverkar den slutgiltiga längden på anställningen (finansieringen får uppgå till tot. max 48 mån.).

ANSTÄLLNINGSVILLKOR
Anställda doktorander ska vara en aktiv del av fakultetens forskning och utbildning på campus i Åbo.  
 
Åbo Akademi följer de finska universitetens lönesystem. Lönen för doktorander läggs enligt kravnivåerna 2-4 för undervisnings- och forskningspersonal. För närvarande är ingångslönen för en ny doktorand ca 2580 €/månad. Lönen kommer att justeras vartefter avhandlingsarbetet framskrider.

Anställda doktorander följer systemet med helhetsarbetstid om 1612 timmar per år. Anställningen är på heltid. Doktoranders individuella studieplan uppföljs årligen.  

Vid nyanställning tillämpas prövotid.

6. Redan antagna ÅA-doktorander: Redovisning över tidigare finansiering (lön, arbetsstipendier) som erhållits för doktorandstudierna (finansiär + tidsperiod + summa) samt eventuell annan finansiering som har sökts för studierna (utöver denna ansökan).
