Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Audio signal processing) / Tutkijatohtori (Audiosignaalinkäsittely)

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en
We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in Audio Signal Processing.
Tampere University Speech and Cognition Research Groupis looking for a postdoctoral research fellow to work on automatic and semi-automatic analysis of long-form audio signals collected from children’s everyday life with wearable microphones. The work is part of a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant project called EveryContext (2026–2031), where the overall aim is to understand young children’s language, auditory, and motor experiences and activities in various everyday contexts.
One part of the EveryContext project is to analyze non-linguistic soundscapes surrounding the recorded children, where the aim is to identify various everyday contexts and activities that the children are involved in. Notably, application of modern machine learning tools to analyze child-centered audio recordings is technically challenging, as there is a massive domain mismatch between commonly employed model training datasets and the current audio recordings of interest. To address this, we are looking for exceptional candidates who are able to tackle the challenge of domain mismatch and develop robust solutions to analyze audio scenes, events, and other acoustic characteristics of the recordings.
As a member of the EveryContext project, you will work on ambitious research questions in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. The position includes close supervision from Prof. Okko Räsänen and co-supervision from Prof. Tuomas Virtanen.
The position is located in the Signal Processing Research Centre of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences in the Unit of Computing Sciences , on the Hervanta campus in Tampere. The work will be conducted on site, by default, as we encourage active participation in the local and vibrant research community.
The current research group, Speech and Cognition Research Group, is one of the four research teams in the Audio Research Group (ARG) of Tampere University working on audio and speech signal processing. ARG is a collaborative and international collective of researchers with a long history in audio signal processing.
Requirements
Candidates must hold an internationally recognized doctoral degree in information technology, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field before the starting date of employment mentioned below. The successful candidate must have the ability to pursue independent scholarly activity in audio signal processing and machine learning, as demonstrated through several high-quality publications in leading journals, conferences, and workshops (e.g., IEEE Transactions, ICASSP, DCASE, or WASPAA). The candidate must be fluent in developing and evaluating machine learning models for audio processing (with PyTorch or TensorFlow) in addition to being proficient in fundamental signal processing theory and techniques. Excellent written and spoken English skills are also essential. The following are considered an advantage:
-
Experience in domain adaptation, active learning, incremental learning, transfer learning, or other relevant techniques to tackle domain mismatch with or without in-domain labeled data.
-
Experience in developing and applying state-of-the-art techniques for audio scene analysis, audio event detection, audio captioning, or related techniques.
-
Experience in working with real-world audio recordings and/or noise-robust audio processing.
-
Experience in participating or organizing computational challenges (e.g., DCASE, ComParE, or others).
-
Good understanding of acoustics (e.g., room acoustics, spatial audio, speech acoustics).
The candidate should also enjoy working in a collaborative manner as a member of a larger research group. Previous experience in supervising junior researchers is also considered an advantage.
Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.
