Staff Scientist, Aerosol Physics/ Tutkimusympäristöasiantuntija, aerosolifysiikka

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi

Infrastructure is in a key role in the research of the Aerosol Physics Laboratory. We have a high-quality aerosol and trace gas measurement infrastructure, including several types of real-time particle counters, particle size analyzers, and several mass spectrometers with atmospheric sampling inlets. Furthermore, we have extensive infrastructures for aerosol process studies, such as aerosol generators, aerosol sampling devices and flow reactors. The Aerosol Physics Laboratory also hosts a traceable particle number concentration standard. The laboratory space and facilities are located at the Hervanta Campus of Tampere University but most of our infrastructure is mobile and can be used in field measurements or measurement campaigns at other laboratories all over the world, e.g. by utilizing our mobile laboratory ATMo-Lab. The staff scientist position is in the ENRE Research Environment Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

 Job description

Staff Scientists are academic personnel who are responsible for specialist activities related to research, providing support to teaching and research staff. The responsibilities of Staff Scientists involve the use and development of research infrastructures and research equipment as well as promoting laboratory safety. Their individual job descriptions are defined in relation to the University’s strategic needs and include teaching, research, and the provision of services.

The primary tasks of the Staff Scientist to be recruited are supporting researchers in experimental work with aerosol and trace gas measurement equipment as well as the maintenance and development of the current and future infrastructure and laboratories. The objective in the position is to ensure that the infrastructure is used to provide reliable and high-quality data that serves the purpose of ambitious research objectives. Therefore, the tasks include supporting researchers in designing and operating the experimental setups as well as data processing and management. In addition, one of the main tasks for the upcoming years is to support the relocation project of the infrastructure in Hervanta campus to the new Noodi laboratory building. This will require planning, coordination, and implementation of the relocation with other staff members to ensure a well-functioning and safe working environment in the new facilities. Also, the tasks entail systematic updating and development of the infrastructure including procurement and public tendering of the equipment, and strong focus on developing the laboratory safety protocols to ensure safe operation of the infrastructure.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with different research groups who do ambiguous aerosol research in globally relevant, industrially and societally relevant topics linked with climate warming, air pollution mitigation and public health. The work in the Aerosol Physics Laboratory includes collaboration with persons at varying research career stages from different disciplines inside and outside the academia. Also, Staff Scientists can have a direct role in various research projects. Thus, the position will enable the successful candidate to apply and develop their expertise in this research field.

Requirements

  • A completed doctoral degree in suitable field, such as physics or environmental sciences, by the start date of the position.
  • Strong understanding of aerosol measurement methods, as well as education and strong expertise in experimental aerosol science. The applicant is expected to have hands‑on experience with both traditional aerosol measurement instruments (e.g., CPCs, SMPSs, ELPIs) and instrumentation used in the mass spectrometry of aerosol particles and trace gases, as well as demonstrated practical experience in conducting measurement campaigns.
  • Willingness to develop measurement infrastructures.
  • Experience in managing and maintaining infrastructures and equipment needed in aerosol particle and trace gas measurement is required.
  • Experience in managing (storing, processing, analyzing) instrument data of multi-instrument experimental research efforts.
  • Excellent scientific writing, presentation, and communication skills in English.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork abilities.

We offer

The position will be filled on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.
