This position reports to Design Manager.

Your role and responsibilities:
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join R&D department at ABB Oy, System Drives division, Helsinki, Finland.

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for mechanical engineering activities within our R&D department in System Drives division. System Drives is further investing in drive system development into different fields of applications (e.g. general industry, hydrogen production and wind turbines) and thus strengthening its design organization. In this role, you will be responsible for participating in product development projects, designing and simulating drives. Moreover, you will bring knowledge on mechanical designs and material science. You will work in cooperation with other design disciplines, production, suppliers, product engineering and other stakeholders.

In this role, you will work with world-class technology in demanding product development projects as a part of our highly skilled and motivated team. You will be mainly accountable for:
– Mechanical design of frequency converters
– Designing sheet metal, extruded and plastic components
– Performing basic structural and thermal simulations
– Solving material related issues (e.g. corrosion)
– Supporting production, product engineering and quality department and mechanics’ suppliers
– Prototyping and hands on testing of mechanical components and assemblies

Qualifications for the role:
– Few years of relevant work experience (e.g. in R&D) is essential
– M.Sc. or DSc. in Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering is relevant
– Ability to demonstrate your excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering: materials (metals and plastics), manufacturing (e.g. sheet metal), thermal management is essential
– Knowledge of electrical components and electricity is relevant
– Knowledge of using PTC Creo and Windchill is essential
– Excellent communication, cooperation and team-work skills are essential
– Professional working proficiency in English is essential, Finnish language skills are an advantage
